Why Puerto Galera Belongs to Most Crowded Destinations During Holy Week

One of the busiest periods in Puerto Galera is during the Holy Week where people take advantage of the four days off from work. For years now, it has been one of the idyllic destinations for local and foreign tourists who want to soak up under the sun.

Because of its proximity to Metro Manila, as compared to Boracay, Puerto Galera can be enjoyed even for an overnight stay. However, accommodation rates go rocket high since it’s peak season. Super peak, actually.

Aside from being closer to the metro, it’s kind of cheaper to go on vacation here than in most of the much coveted Holy Week destinations in the country as you won’t be spending huge chunk of your budget for airfare.

Holy Week in Puerto Galera

BUT, just like falling in line in airport terminals on a Holy Week, you can expect similar scene on the bus terminal going to Batangas, more so on the port. So you’ve got to have unlimited patience until you reach the infamous shores of Puerto Galera.

BUT, since it’s Holy Week, you have to share the entire stretch of White Beach with hundreds of beach-bumming people crowding the shoreline. If this isn’t your kind of beach escapade, Puerto Galera on Holy Week isn’t much of a bright idea.

BUT, for those who want some time to reflect and observe Holy Week traditions, you can still do so by visiting the Immaculate Conception Parish Church in Poblacion, Puerto Galera.

Whichever way we choose to spend Holy Week, take some time to say a little prayer and reflect on what the Lenten Season is meant for.

Renewable Energy Project in Mindoro Promises Many Benefits for the Locals

This story was first published on philstar.com.

CALAPAN CITY, Philippines – The planned P3.425-billion wind project in the southernmost town of Oriental Mindoro will be granted incentives by the Board of Investments.

In a statement, PhilCarbon Inc. said the BOI registered the renewable energy project, making it qualified for fiscal incentives under the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.

Phil Carbon is conducting pre-development of the 33.4-megawatt wind project, one of the two similar big amount power projects in the island province to date. The other big energy project s the P6-billion Wind Energy Power System (WEPS) project in the northern town of Puerto Galera by the Philippine Hybrid Energy System Inc.

“The BOI has approved our application for registration as a new renewable energy developer of wind power energy resources to avail of incentives, such as duty-free importation of capital equipment, as we prepare for the construction of our wind power projects,” Yu-Owen said.

According to the PhilCarbon head, the funding for the project would come from a mixture of debt and private equity, or from their capital and outside borrowings.

Called the Bulalacao Windpower Project, the proponent company is targeting to start the construction of the wind facility by September 2014 and to complete the project in January 2016.

Mindoro Supports Cross Breeding Program of Mud Crabs

This story was first published on sunstar.com.ph by Henrylito D. Tacio.

Mud crabs, especially females that have fat or “aligue,” are highly-esteemed gourmet seafood in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, China, and Japan. The Philippines is a mud crab exporter to these countries.

Growing mud crabs and other fish species is envisioned to be a major agriculture program since the Philippines is among world’s biggest fishery producers. In 2011, the country produced 15,730 metric tons of mud crabs.

The Bureau of Agricultural Research (BAR) said growing mud crabs is a profitable venture. A farmer can harvest 1,200 kilograms of mud crabs per hectare per cropping of five months. At P400 per kilo, it can give an additional income to farmers of P480,000 per cropping or P960,000 for two croppings a year.

cross breeding mud crabs in mindoroAlthough a viable project, it has one big problem: continuous seedstocks for continuous mud crab production.

BAR, a line agency of the Department of Agriculture, thought of one possible solution: cross breeding the giant mud crabs from Zamboanga Sibugay and the native crab of Mindoro.

The program has been supported by Oriental Mindoro Congressman Reynaldo V. Umali. Last December 12, 2012, massive mangrove planting took place in the province after the Unified Tree of Life (UTOL) Program. It aims to plant 12 million trees from the highlands to the coastal areas.

Robinsons Mall is Now Open in Calapan City

It becomes Oriental Mindoro’s first and largest commercial establishment to rise within the project Xevera Neo Calapan, in Calapan City.

It brings to Oriental Mindoro the Robinsons brand of shopping, with its seal of quality, efficiency and convenience. Though there are other places of shopping and recreation around the province, Neo Calapan Mall is a notch higher as it will house Robinsons’ signature stores, namely Robinsons Supermarket, Department Store, Appliance Center and Handyman Do-it Best Home Center.

Aside from these, spa and wellness centers, games and amusement arcade, and two 150-seater cinemas, among others, will also operate inside the mall, offering entertainment and recreation. These establishments are expected to turn shopping and relaxation into a first-class experience in the province, providing Mindoreños a taste of the urban lifestyle.

Calapan City’s New Modern Public Market

A new and state of the art two-storey public market has been operating for almost two months after being introduced and inaugurated by President Noynoy Aquino together with local and provincial officials on December 15, 2011 in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro.

In his message during the inauguration of the New Calapan City Public Market here, the President commended the locals for facing up to the challenges and showing unity in such trials.

“Tunay na sagisag ang gusaling ito sa kasipagan at katatagan ng mga Mindorenos. Ilang beses man tinupok ng apoy ang inyong naipatayong pamilihan, hindi kayo nagpatinag. Bumangon kayo at muling nagsumikap”, the President said.

From the old public market which was burned to ashes for the third time in May of 2008, the 200 million-new public market was built not just as a state-of-the-art edifice, but more over, as a significant structure symbolizing progress and testament to the resiliency and strength of an entire city.

Contradicting to the ordinary public market design, its wet market like meat, fish and vegetable stalls can be found on its second floor while those of dry products such as RTW and household items can be found on the first. The 188 million mall-like public market was colored orange, followed after the color of Calapan City Mayor Doy Leachon.

The new modern public market and passenger terminal won the Outstanding Development Projects award for 2010 by the Association of Development Financing Institutions in Asia and the Pacific (ADFIAP).

The ADFIAP award recognizes and honors institutional members which have undertaken and assisted projects that have created development in their respective countries. ADFIAP is the focal point of all development banks and other financial institutions engaged in the financing of development in the Asia-Pacific region. Founded in 1976, its mission is to advance sustainable development through its 120 member-institutions in 43 countries.
